Course registrationsHide

There are different types of courses.

  • You can (and should) simply go to lectures at the beginning of the semester...
  • You must register for seminars, exercises and field exercises quite early, usually at the end of the previous semester..

You must register for seminars, exercises and field exercises quite early, usually at the end of the previous semester..
Don't panic: This does not affect you at the beginning of your studies; you must register for the first time during your first semester, e.g. for seminars in the second semester. Registrations are usually made with the study coordinator Jasmin Samimi and are announced in good time.

-on the notice board near lecture hall 8,
-on the website under News and
-announced via the newsletter.

A word about courses that require registration: Registration is necessary because only a certain number of places are available per seminar or field exercise, so that these courses ensure the highest level of support for you.
Registration is therefore binding and it is annoying and uncollegial if allocated places are not taken up. If you cancel your registration at too short notice or without sufficient reason, or if you do not attend the event without an excuse, it will be considered a fail.

Please also consider the valid rules.

Registration for examinationsHide

Already at the end of your first semester, you will have to take your first exams. You must register for the examinations independently and in good time online via the examination administration system. You will receive an ID and a password for this purpose when you enrol.

Please bear in mind that you must also register for all repeat examinations.

Please note the information you will receive from the examination office after your enrolment, which will explain everything in detail.

Study abroadHide

Students who would like to spend a semester at a foreign university as part of their studies can find out about the general modalities at the International Office.

We have also compiled various options specifically for geography students on a separate page.

Student email addressHide
  • When you enrol, you will receive a student email address.
  • Only this email address will be accepted for registrations for geography events.

You can set up a forwarding from the student account to your private address. Please make sure to empty your "inbox". This way you can avoid that we do not reach you. At this point, we would like to point out a little "how to" in connection with emails.

Studying with child(ren)Hide

As part of the Family-friendly University, the Department of Geography warmly welcomes students with children.

On the pages of the Family-friendly University, you will receive general advice on special regulations concerning pregnancy and birth, as well as information on childcare facilities in the immediate vicinity of the campus.

  • The parent-child workroom on campus and a play corner in the refectory allow students to bring their children to the university if necessary.
  • The Department of Geography is equipped with baby changing facilities in the washrooms.
  • In the B8 annexe and in the NWI there are also rooms for breastfeeding.

The extent to which children can be brought to courses depends on the respective course format.  Please contact the lecturers directly. Special consideration can be given to students with children when allocating courses. When booking a course, please state that you have a child and are therefore dependent on certain times or places

Studying with a chronic illness or disabilityHide

Studying with a chronic illness or disability is possible in principle at the Institute of Geography and making it possible is our goal within the framework of equal opportunities.

The type and severity of the impairment are decisive for the organisation and the chances of success of your studies. Unfortunately, not all of the institute's rooms are barrier-free at present. Especially for field exercises and excursions, arrangements should be made directly with the respective lecturer to ensure successful participation in the course.

Please also formulate your needs when registering for the courses so that you are assigned to a group that is suitable for your needs. The study and examination regulations of the Department of Geography can be modified according to your special needs upon request.

Detailed advice and mediation is available from the Office of the Representative for Disabled and Chronically Ill Students (BECKS). The BECKS also offers an open consultation hour for people with chronic illness or disability during the lecture period.
